Created by teachers, parents, education experts, and others from across the country, the standards provide clear, consistent expectations for what students should be learning at each grade in order to be prepared for college and career.

National PTA® created the guides for grades K-8 and two for grades 9-12 (one for English language arts/literacy and one for mathematics). More Resources

The Guide includes:

Key items that children should be learning in English language arts and mathematics in each grade, once the standards are fully implemented.

Activities that parents can do at home to support their child’s learning.

Methods for helping parents build stronger relationships with their child’s teacher.

Tips for planning for college and career (high school only).

Implementation of the Common Core Standards is in its early stages. It is likely that they are not currently in place in your school or school district. Each state is working on developing its own timeline and plans to implement the standards. To find out more about your state’s plans to adopt or implement the standards, please contact your state education agency.

PTAs can play a pivotal role in how the standards are put in place at the state and district levels. PTA® leaders are encouraged to meet with their school, district, and/or state administrators to discuss their plans to implement the standards and how their PTA can support that work. The goal is that PTAs and education administrators will collaborate on how to share the guides with all of the parents and caregivers in their states or communities, once the standards are fully implemented. Ultimately, the aim is for the Guide to be a tool for parents to build relationships with their children’s teachers once the standards are fully in place.

Your School. Your Voice. Take Your School Survey by April 5!

The NYC School Survey helps school leaders understand what key members of the school community say about the learning environment at each school. The information captured by the survey is designed to support a dialogue among all members of the school community about how to make the school a better place to learn.

School Survey Overview
Every year, all parents, all teachers, and students in grades 6 – 12 take the NYC School Survey. The survey ranks among the largest surveys of any kind ever conducted nationally.

Survey results provide insight into a school’s learning environment and contribute a measure of diversification that goes beyond test scores on the Progress Report. NYC School Survey results contribute 10% – 15% of a school’s Progress Report grade (the exact contribution to the Progress Report is dependant on school type). Survey questions assess the community’s opinions on academic expectations, communication, engagement, and safety and respect. School leaders can use survey results to better understand their own school’s strengths and target areas for improvement.

Over the next few years, New York and more than 40 other states across the country will transition to a new set of learning standards, called the Common Core. The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.

Raising the Bar is a roadmap for student success in New York City public schools. It was written for YOU, to describe our plans for getting students ready for college and careers.

The Department is raising expectations for teaching and learning. We are creating new schools designed for student success and working hard to improve existing schools, and we ALL have a role to play in boosting student achievement.

College and careers is the goal, and working together—students, parents, families, teachers, and schools—we can get there.

So please, read Raising the Bar. Find out how you can be our partner in writing more student success stories.
